For some time I've been wanting to experiment more with my off camera flash technique as per Strobist (using studio techniques with small camera based flash guns off camera).
The middle of a busy wedding is not normally the place to try out new stuff, but I had recently been along to a meeting of the London Portrait Group where Uzair Kharawala (Oz) demonstrated how he shoots with a Nikon flash on a light stand with a shoot through umbrella for a very easily set up system. This was the inspiration I needed.
I had all the kit, Canon 5D, 24-105 lens, Speedlite 550EX flash and ST-E2 Transmitter as well as several stands, brollies and wireless flash triggers, so took it with me to a couple of recent weddings.
First experiments were using the set-up on the dance floor with the brolly fairly high up to the side of the disco. I quickly learned where to place myself in relation to the light, to avoid hotspots and shadows spoiling the shots.
These ones were done outside. They had a few spotlights in at the side of the gravel path. I set up the brolly to camera left and played with the power and direction for the best effect.
